Nuevo Imparcial.- Madrid has added the name of Margaret Thatcher to one of its squares which is located at the confluence of the Paseo de la Castellana and Calle Goya. The Mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella, has uncovered a plaque honoring this political figure of the twentieth century (1925-2013) in which she emphasized her commitment to freedom. The mayor of Madrid has referred to Thatcher as a person «of historic stature and a great leader of the Conservative Party during the second half of the twentieth century, a transformative politician who always defended British interests and was strongly involved in major decisions and agreements precursor of the European Union, «Margaret Thatcher believed above all in freedom, and its transforming power.» The Full Council of Madrid agreed to name Margaret Thatcher to a public space in the city. An agreement was finalized on June 5th by the Governing Board.

The British Ambassador in Spain, Simon Manley, described Thatcher as «one of the great leaders of the twentieth century», «unquestionably a great patriot and servant of his country» and a «passionate advocate of a Europe whole and free, away from the Soviet Union., «We’re really excited because Madrid has dedicated the square to the memory of Margaret Thatcher,» said the ambassador, » she restored competitiveness and also the faith in the British people themselves » but that has not changed the fact that she remains a figure of controversy».

Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of Great Britain between 1979 and 1990 she was known as «The Iron Lady» and established herself as one of the great figures of the past century «for her commitment to freedom,» said Ana Botella. It also emphasized the personality of the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom who defended «hard» British interests, but «knew and wanted to work with European partners and participate in major decisions precursor of today’s European Union.» The daughter of a councilman and mayor of Grantham, her hometown, Thatcher showed a transforming personality and was a great fighter against terrorism «that she fought with exemplary firmness.» This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, which marked the end of communist totalitarianism in Eastern Europe. This historic event, recalled Botella, «would not have occurred without her decisive option to strengthen the Atlantic connection that had secured the peace and prosperity of the West against the devastation of dictatorship and communism.»
