National Museum of Science and Technology opens in Alcobendas

INAUGURACION MUNCYT-1

Nuevo Imparcial.- The Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, Minister of Economy and Competitiveness, Luis de Guindos, and the Mayor of Alcobendas, Ignacio García de Vinuesa, today inaugurated the new headquarters of the National Museum of Science and Technology (MUNCYT) in Alcobendas. The agreement between the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the City of Alcobendas and «la Caixa» has enabled the museum to be moved from its previous location in a building of the Railway Museum, to a space that allows the exhibition of a much broader collection of scientific and technological heritage.

The building of MUNCYT ( headquartered in La Coruña ) Alcobendas, which is an open, dynamic and innovative social centre that aims to bring science to society. It consists of two parts: the museum space itself, which displays the relevant national scientific heritage and a program of activities to invite public participation in science, ranging from camps and workshops that encourage curiosity and interest for children up to meetings and scientific conferences.

The building which housed Cosmocaixa- has been re-assigned by the municipality of Alcobendas for the new project. It has the financial support of the «la Caixa» Welfare Projects, which will allocate 1.8 million Euros over the next three years to enhance the programming and exhibits for the new centre. La Caixa has also given the contents that were displayed in the permanent room of the former centre and offered them for future exhibitions, designed to encourage and disseminate scientific knowledge.

The new headquarters has more than 3,000 m2 of exhibition area hosting more than 500 pieces of our historical and scientific heritage, as well as over 2,000 m2 of classrooms that will be used for workshops and educational activities. More information is on the website of MUNCYT: http://www.muncyt.es
