Carolina Marin made history on Sunday by becoming the first Spanish and the third European to become world champion after winning the World Badminton Championship in Copenhagen (Denmark), and won gold in the final against China’s Li Xuerui number one world and Olympic champion, 21-17, 17-21 and 18-21. Carolina Marin becomes the champion of Europe and the world after a fight to the last minute. In the first set she went behind (21-17), but held her ground and ended up making war against China’s favorite. In the second set, the Spaniard stepped up her extraordinary level of play and equaled the final (17-21). For the third set she knew how to handle the nerves and played impressively decisive points to achieve the gold medal. It is the first time in history that a Spaniard has managed to win gold in the final of the World badminton and also to get, after 13 years, a European player to compete in the final, after the Danish Lene Koppen (1977) and Camilla Martin (1999). Both players had met three times, always with Chinese victory, the last one held in the SS Japan Open last June. With this unsurpassed performance in the World, this Sunday, Carolina Marin has signed one of the greatest feats of Spanish sport and has put national badminton in the first rank of the global landscape
